General John W. Vessey, Jr. achieved the highest position in the military, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.  He had four stars but was known as the “soldier’s general” because he had held every rank in the Army, from PFC to the top. He was a great leader.

The bust was placed on display at the Armory in Minneapolis until it was offered to the Officer’s Club at Fort Snelling, Minnesota.

Another little known fact about this great man is that he joined the Army at age 16 in violation of the Federal Law preventing any man to enlist under the age of 17 and so became a VUMS (Veteran of Underage Military Service).
